Even very young 'uns can handle this delicious—and educational—cooking project from beginning to end.

If you’re looking for a fun, easy cooking project that kids can do all by themselves, a cheese board is a perfect place to start. There’s very little mess, zero heat, and, because any board can be customized in countless ways, there’s no chance of failure. Plus, you end up with an easy, no-cook dinner perfect for your Yule-season spread.

Start by bringing your child to a supermarket or specialty cheese store. (Kids may get a kick out of the fact that the people manning the counter are called ‘cheesemongers.’) Tell them what you’re up to—they’ll likely give you a few samples so you can see what flavors your child likes. Look for 4-5 kinds of cheese, and make sure they’re all different.

Good picks: a soft, creamy cheese like Brie, a semi-hard cheese like nutty Manchego, and a harder, aged kind like Parmesan. Be sure to encourage your kid to mix up the milks. It might come as a surprise to them that cheeses come from the milk of many animals, including goats, sheep, and even water buffalo.

Then it’s time to customize additions to round out the board. There’s almost no way to go wrong here, so encourage them to brainstorm about what items might taste good alongside cheese. Some ideas to get you started:

  • Fresh fruit like apples, pears, or grapes
  • Hot pepper jelly
  • Olives
  • Mustard
  • Baguette slices
  • Nuts such as almonds and pecans
  • Crackers
  • Honey
  • Sliced sausages

Once you have everything on hand, step away and let your children get creative. They can make labels for the cheeses on their board (or get them in your first monthly Little Sous Kitchen Academy Cooking Box). Give everyone in your family a small plate, then invite them to mix and match their favorites—it’s bound to be a Gouda time.
