Our Easy Taco Seasoning Blend Will Make You Wish It was Tuesday Every Day

Ditch the packet—kids can make this combo all by themselves.

Somewhere along the line, Americans got duped into believing that an envelope was a necessary part of taco night. No matter what brand, no matter what size, many of us grew up thinking a store-bought packet of “taco seasoning” was not only normal, but mandatory.

Sure, they’re convenient, but those envelopes are full of salt and preservatives, and honestly, they pale in comparison to what you can whip up at home. Even better, the DIY version costs half the price.

Our measure-and-stir recipe is a great way to let your kids explore a wide variety of bold flavors and aromas. Take some time for your Little Sous to examine the ingredients with all five senses: Describe the colors, dip in a finger to taste the spice on its own (be careful with the cayenne!), smell the toasty cumin, and talk about what you’re both experiencing before blending it all together.

When dinner time rolls around, simply brown a pound of ground beef or turkey, then drain. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of the spice blend to the pan and stir to combine. The blend also pairs well with refried or black beans, roasted potatoes, and even macaroni and cheese.

Remember, this combo (like all of our recipes) is just a starting place. You can shake things up by adding a bit more or less of each ingredient—or even adding a new ingredient altogether—to make a one-of-a-kind blend that fits your family’s tastes.

DIY Taco Seasoning

If your family loves tacos, you can easily double or triple this zesty blend. Simply add a teaspoon of cornstarch to prevent clumping, then store in a jar with a tight lid.

  • Yield: About 3 tablespoons, equivalent to one store-bought 1.25 ounce packet of taco seasoning

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder, or less depending on spice tolerance
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon fresh black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes, optional

Steps:

    In a small bowl or jar, stir together all of the ingredients. Use immediately or store in an airtight container.
